OVERVIEW

We tolerate many months of dark, wet, cool weather each winter. But the following summer and autumn, we reap one of the benefits: a bounty of mushrooms which flourish as they decay last winter's leaf litter. For those interested in cooking, our native mushrooms provide a wonderful variety of textures and flavours.

We have permission from the landowners to search some fungi-rich forests in North Mull for tasty edible mushrooms. The focus will be on how to identify the more easily recognisable edible species and how to safely grow your knowledge and confidence. We will also lookout for poisonous fungi to help you recognise and avoid these.

The foray will also cover how to be an environmentally responsible forager as well as how to clean, prepare, cook and preserve the mushrooms you find. We will share ideas of good mushroom foraging locations and tested recipes. We will listen and look for interesting wildlife as we forage.

Logistics:

  • Meet at an agreed time & location (your own transport is required)

  • Wear hiking boots and long trousers/long sleeves

  • Have rain layers ready

  • Be prepared for walking up steep slopes and on unsteady ground

  • Take a basket and penknife if you have one, no worries if not!

Guide:

Dr Conor Ryan is a zoologist from Cobh in Ireland. Although not a mycologist, he has been gathering edible mushrooms since before he could walk or talk, learning from his father. Conor has built-on that knowledge and admits that one of the reasons he has lived on Mull for over 6 years is for the incredible foraging opportunities here. Conor has delivered practical foraging classes for the University of Highlands and Islands and for Lindblad/National Geographic and previously supplied wild mushrooms to restaurants and the producers markets on Mull.
