Hitting the Heights...

A great day up in the mountains yesterday with wildlife highlights including three Mountain Hares (two partially white and one clean white), Snow Bunting, adult Golden Eagle and potential Ptarmigan prints. Meadow Pipits were also seen on territory and displaying.

The fresh covering of snow revealed countless Mountain Hare tracks around the boulder fields, within a Golden Eagles territory, which is a very healthy ecological sign for the apex predators. This Golden Eagle pair seem to be one of the most productive breeders on the island and part of the reason must be to do with the abundance of hares at high altitudes in their home range.
